If you stop at our library during the month of September you can take a peek at the new display that has been set up. Tom Medick, of Kingston, has lent the library some of his wonderful woodworking projects. This display is all wooden toys. When we asked Tom how he got starting making these wooden toys he replied "It was something to do when the fish weren't biting."
Tom retired about 6 years ago and found that he needed something to keep him busy so he started doing woodworking projects. Tom had been a carpenters mate in the Navy, and then worked doing maintenance until he retired so had had plenty of experience in carpentry.
The display has all different kinds of trucks, a train, and several planes. One of the planes is a replica of the Spirit of St. Louis, the plane that Charles Lindbergh flew on the first solo non-stop transatlantic flight from Long Island, NY to Paris, France for which Lindbergh won the $25,000 Orteig Prize. Lindbergh took off in the Spirit from Roosevelt Airfield in Garden City, NY and landed 33 hours and 30 minutes later at Aeroport Le Bourget in Paris, France, a distance of approximately 3,600 miles. One of the best known aircraft in the world, The Spirit is now on permanent display at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C.
If you'd like to see the wooden replica of the Spirit, stop in at the Library during the month of Sept. Also in September our story hour will be starting again after the summer break, on Thursdays at 4:30pm. All ages are welcome!
