7/12/15 .Stop, Drop, and Roll at the Library

Our second hero to read to the children was Joel Strahota of the Markesan Fire Dept.  The story was "Spark the Firefighter" by Stephen Krensky about a fire breathing dragon that was afraid of fire until he joined the fire dept. and learned about it.  Joel also brought along another member, Collin Prill, to assist him in showing what a fire fighter wears to a fire, which is about 50 pounds of gear.  Children got to try on a fire resistant coat, see the different axes firefighters use to get through walls & doors, and look through a thermal imaging camera.  The camera helps to give sight to a firefighter while inside a burning building to visualize their plan of attack, locate hot spots, and save lives.  Joel also taught the children several safety measures. "Stop, Drop, and Roll" if their clothing should catch on fire.  "Stay Low and Go" if they had to exit a burning room or house.  And maybe most important to not hide but yell as loud as possible if they were trapped in a fire of any kind.
This week we have scientist Becky Knight coming to read and talk about the work a scientist does.  And on July 23rd we have Incredible Bats coming to the library.  Learn about, and touch, a live Egyptian Fruit Bat and others.  Any and all are welcome at the programs which run at 2pm on Thursdays.  Hope to see you there!!
